Test mode lets you build and validate your Flexpa integration against representative API response shapes, without using real patient data.

To trigger test mode, use your test mode API keys for the Flexpa Consent authentication flow.

#What test mode is for

Wiring up an end-to-end Flexpa Consent session against test API keys.
Inspecting the structure of FHIR responses your application will receive — resource types, field names, value sets, and references between resources.
Writing and exercising your client code, error handling, and rendering logic against synthetic but representative data.

#What test mode is not for

Test mode is not a behavioral replica of live mode. It will not predict:

The completeness or quality of data your real users' payers, EHRs, and TEFCA responders return. Real responses vary by payer, plan type, geography, network, and the individual user's history — and that variability only appears in live mode.
Imperfect or noisy entries — repeated providers in an EOB Care Team, partial or stale addresses, missing claims, sparse clinical data. These are characteristics of real-world data sources and synthetic fixtures will not reproduce them.
Latency or reliability characteristics of live payer, provider, or TEFCA endpoints.

If you are trying to validate how your application handles imperfect or unexpected production data, you need live mode.

Flexpa provides test mode support for all three data sources in our 3-in-1 network: health insurers (claims data), medical record systems (provider/EHR data), and nationwide exchange (TEFCA). Each source has specific test credentials and synthetic data to help you build and validate your integration before going live.

#Health insurers

In test mode, search for "FooMedical" or "Acme Health Plan" in Flexpa Consent - these are Flexpa's test payers. ("YourChart" is a test provider/EHR, not a payer — see Medical record systems.) Do not select real payers like Humana or Kaiser, as they will redirect you to the payer's own sandbox with different credentials. To test the credentials-based portal pathway instead of SMART on FHIR, see Patient portals.

Select FooMedical or Acme Health Plan in Flexpa Consent. For Acme Health Plan, no credentials are needed — simply select a patient. For FooMedical, use the credentials below to login.

FooMedical is powered by Medplum, an open-source, headless EHR and FHIR server. We have populated it with synthetic patient data that is representative of the structure seen in live mode for major payers. We will continue to add new synthetic data for the payers and plan types customers need, so let us know at support@flexpa.com

Acme Health Plan is powered by mock.health, a FHIR R4 sandbox with thousands of synthetic patients built on Synthea. Select any patient from the portal — no credentials required. Employer-sponsored and off-exchange commercial plans are not required to offer a federally mandated Patient Access API, so Flexpa reaches them through proprietary patient portal integrations rather than SMART on FHIR. The member signs in with their portal credentials instead of being redirected to an OAuth server.

In test mode, pick "Cigna" or "Aetna" from the popular list in Flexpa Consent, or search for "UnitedHealthcare", then choose "Through an employer" on the plan type screen. Any other plan type sends you to that payer's own SMART sandbox, which takes the credentials under Health insurers instead.

UnitedHealthcare also asks for a state, and answering CA, FL, GA, IL, NY, OH or TX routes to its SMART sandbox rather than the portal. Any other state reaches the sign-in. Cigna and Aetna do not ask.

#Signing in

The test-mode portal accepts any password. The username is what selects the scenario, so one account drives the happy path and every failure branch. The sign-in screen says as much in test mode, so the common case needs no lookup; the table below is for reaching a specific failure.

When MFA is requested, two methods are offered: email (j...e@example.com) and SMS (+1 XXX-XXX-5555). Any code is accepted, and these values trigger specific failures:

#Nationwide exchange

The below test accounts support the full IAL2 verification flow with complete demographic data. When the QHIN test sandbox returns no documents for a test identity, Flexpa automatically injects fixture documents to ensure consistent test data.

The ID.me test accounts are currently broken in test mode. We recommend using CLEAR for testing until this issue is resolved.

#Test Documents

When a test mode TEFCA connection returns no documents from the QHIN sandbox, Flexpa automatically injects three fixture documents so you always have data to develop against:

Contains narrative sections for allergies (Penicillin), medications (Lisinopril 10mg), and problem list (Hypertension). Sections are human-readable narrative only — no structured FHIR clinical resources are derived from this document.
`FLEXPA-TEST-002` — Hospital Discharge Summary	Jane Doe at Flexpa Test Medical Center. Contains narrative history of present illness, hospital course, and discharge diagnosis (non-cardiac chest pain). Narrative only — no structured FHIR clinical resources are derived.
`FLEXPA-TEST-003` — Continuity of Care Document	De-identified encounter summary from a real-world C-CDA. Contains structured FHIR resources including `Condition`, `MedicationRequest`, `Observation`, `AllergyIntolerance`, `Procedure`, `Encounter`, and `Immunization`.

Fixture documents contain their own embedded patient demographics in the C-CDA recordTarget element. In test mode, these demographics (Jane Doe for FLEXPA-TEST-001/FLEXPA-TEST-002, and a de-identified patient for FLEXPA-TEST-003) will appear as additional Patient resources in the FHIR response alongside the verified test identity. This is expected behavior in test mode.

#Medical record systems

Test mode provides access to EHR vendor sandbox environments for development and testing with provider data.

In test mode, search for "Epic", "Cerner", or "Athena" in Flexpa Consent to connect to each EHR's sandbox environment. Select the EHR you want to test, then use the credentials below to login.

Test mode sandboxes return synthetic patient data from each EHR vendor's test environment. Sandbox data may differ from production implementations in terms of resource completeness and data quality.

Flexpa also provides YourChart, an Epic-style SMART/FHIR provider facility for testing provider/EHR connections. Search for "YourChart" in Flexpa Consent — no credentials are needed, simply select a patient. Its synthetic patient data is powered by mock.health, the same FHIR R4 sandbox that backs Acme Health Plan under Health insurers.
